Finding the right school.

Starting my last week of school as an Undergrad student just made me nervous and excited. I don’t have a job lined-up and I like to feel productive all the time, consequently; I have decided to jump into pursuing a Master degree, a job is still welcome. In my case, I’m graduating with a B.S in Marketing which I had fun learning from it. Marketing is a very social career, which makes things interesting since I have met many people from different backgrounds and some became good friends of mine. This leads me to say networking is very important in any field specially when you have met people in the same area of study as you.

I have started, slowly but surely, researching some schools that fit what I am looking for; therefore, start with their requirements ASAP. I first decided that my first option should be going abroad specially Europe, since I have never been yet I have talked to people from there and made me interested about it. However, let’s have in mind that expenses increase if you go abroad.

Indeed, another option could be stay in the US and therefore meet other requirements such as the GMAT. Many people could say the smartest move would be stay local and pay less but in my opinion is the whole experience to live in another country that I have never been, speak another language, and learn from another culture.

In conclusion, one of the schools that I am very interested in is the IED, Istituto Europeo di Design witch branches located in Italy, Spain, and Brazil.  There, I could see the opportunity to work on my Marketing Masters and being in touch in Graphic Communications, which I also like.

Let's think outside the box

This phrase should be applied by us, rationale human beings, at all times. Consider eating healthy, talking to friends, looking for a job, solving a problem, taking a decision, and in many more situations. We should all be aware of our regular habits that could drag us to be stuck in a routine. I would like to focus this post on different skills that Graphic Designers should have in order to succeed in a tough competitor world; the kind that employers are looking for, the kind that could be in one phrase “Think outside the box”. Note that I would like to share this because I actually feel myself stuck on what I want to do with my Marketing degree and a passion in Graphic Design. I also noticed that some skills are valid to find any type of job not just for Business and Art.

Reading at David Airey blog series post on What employers look for there is one skill that should be priority for everything we do in life; Show intelligence. No matter what your grades are/were in college but make an effort to talk smart; think before you talk, show that you can articulate yourself, and most important how you deliver your thoughts and ideas.

Be hungry. Have in mind that there is no space for mediocrity; always think on winning, getting the job, and mostly designing a piece of art that fulfills you.

Practice. Perfection comes from practice. In the digital worlds which do things already perfect it takes lot of patience, trial by error, and time to do things imperfect. This leads to Commitment.

Commitment. Like in everything you wish and want you have to be committed to it. Especially for young designers like me, we need to prove employers that their investment on us is worth it. It is repeatedly but necessary to say: get early and leave late.    

I hope these skills trigger you the desire to be passionate on what you are doing because at the end if you are happy you deliver happiness, good work, good vibes, and people would love to work with you anytime.
